Dance.net Deadline: Thu May 12, 2011 Prize Amount: $150
Dance.net needs a brandable logo that is modern, stylistic, and exciting.
About Dance.net
Dance.net is the most popular dance community on the net. We offer everything from news, forums, jobs, auditions, polls, chat, and a global directory.
Read the briefSubmit Entry
This logo will be used on the main Dance.net website as well as for our app in the iPhone app store. In addition, it needs to show well on merchandise such as T-shirts and accessories.
Looking For
A modern and exciting logo. It should incorporate "movement" in some form. The "D" does not need to be capitalized, but can be. It should show well on the website. It will also be used for the icon on the iPhone app store, and on merchandise such as t-shirts.
Not Looking For
Don't want something that is too girly or pink. Dance.net is a community for all, so the logo needs to be gender-neutral.

Thanks for your submission, but the "dance.net" type itself needs to be stylized to a greater extent. The purple logo is too large in relation to the type, and doesn't appear to mesh/blend well with the text. |

Razz, good start. However, it brings to mind more a college sport or cheerleading vibe with those stars, stroke, and colors. Try to tailor the design closer to dancing such as ballet or partner dancing. Note that since we cater to all dance forms, it'd be better if one specific dance form didn't dominate. Think wavy and flowing, and non-descript dancing.
Also, the stars flying out of the D in the icon don't do much for me especially since the trails make the D look like a "B" when it's shrunken down.
One possibility is to have the trails form part of the Dance.net type somehow, and one star making up the period. Or the trails could form one or more dancers, etc. |

I like the dancing figure, but the arms looking like green leaves brings about a feeling of nature or "being green" which doesn't apply to many dance styles. |

Nishantika, I like the blue figure lots since it looks like it's doing a dance leap. The water drops coming off the hands don't fit a strong dance theme though. It might bring to mind sweat which has some negative connotations. Maybe instead of the water drops, you could have ribbons flowing away from the hands. The ribbons could form part of the Dance.net type, too, like maybe the "D".
I'd also encourage you to play around with the type since it looks too "stock." In particular, the dot or period is highly significant to our members who sometimes use "DDN" (dance dot net) as a short-hand. Great start though! |

I have removed the water droplets for now. Will add the ribbons tomorrow. |

Thanks for your entry. When I first saw it, I thought the red part of the dance figure was a wall and the black figure was snuggling up to it. But upon further inspection, it looks like it's part of the figure. So I'd suggest using similar colors for the figure.
The Dance.net type is angular whereas the figure is soft/wavy, so there isn't a strong connection between the two.
My suggestions are to incorporate the figure into the type itself somehow, possibly making up parts of the "D", and have the type flow more to indicate dancing. |

I tried this with the ribbons as suggested but this is looking much better. Moreover ribbons will be difficult to print on cards and merchandise. You have to keep the print media in mind too... |

I like the changes you made. It definitely flows together better. A couple suggestions would be to use blue as the main color, and to have the D and the dancer connect more, like the top curly part of the D connect to the body or arm in some way. |

These are interesting logos with the dancing figures. My main worry is that each clearly represents one type of dance style like ballet or social dance. Dance.net represents most major dance forms, so it would be better if the figures were not as easily identified as a specific dance style. |

The font choice looks fun. The circles overhead are interesting though I wonder if you can make them connect to the letters more. Right now, they are dots with no apparent(?) purpose. One idea is to make them heads and the font to be individual dancers with each letter. |

This is a neat interpretation and one I like. I wonder if you could do a few variations on the D especially with respect to the dancer's arms? |

Actually the dancing figure could be ballet like but it is just an iconic representation. You will find that I am done the figures in great detail... they really look artistic and professional. They are full vector figures so you will be able to scale your logo up to hoarding size or print them even on business cards without loosing clarity. |

A more generic design with no dancer image but a dancer like 'D'... Hope you will like it. |

This represents a generic dance form and is very neat and professional. Just for you! |

The dots represent heads, and the letters represent dancers in different moments of movement. It's clear enough for a logo.
A good logo needs to have a certain level of abstractivism, otherwise, if it's too illustrative, it's an ilustration, not a logo.
Do not think of the people who look at a logo as being stupid. They will understand a good logo.
Look at the nike logo: a simple symbol, not a person running. |
re: Logo for Dance.net en>fr fr>en By nishantika Comments: 16, member since Thu Jan 20, 2011On Sat Feb 05, 2011 11:03 PM
May I politely beg to differ with the above message?
First of all I did not understand what the three dots meant and it is clear from the contest holder's (dancenet's) response that neither did he understand what the dots meant else he would not have asked.
I might be stupid but since dancenet is in the dance profession it would be unwise to assume he is stupid too. If he does not understand then how would his audience?
Secondly its a matter of perspective not to use related icons in logos. While nike uses only a swoosh on the contrary apple uses a full fledged apple for its logo.
Lufthansa uses a bird.
Firefox uses a fox.
I am not saying that using abstract concepts is bad but if a company is of huge size and impact then it can afford to use abstract concepts to make people think! Else if its small people will just not care to put their brains into it. Nike can make people think!
So the approach should be to use something meaningful and related in the start and then when the company reaches that stature it should redesign its logo to make people think.
For example the old logo of animal planet had an elephant in it but the new one does not!

"apple uses a full fledged apple for its logo.
Lufthansa uses a bird.
Firefox uses a fox."
Exactly, apple uses an apple, not a computer.
Lufthansa uses a bird, not a plane.
Firefox uses a fox, not an image of a browser.
It's the same with dance.net, I used dynamic letters that represent movement, and colored dots of different colour to represent dynamism, not an image of a person dancing.
With Lufthansa and Firefox it's the same level of abstractivism of the concept of the logo in that the representational item in the icon does not represent an image of the actual business of the company, but a related object, or other element that gives viewers the main idea of the business of the company.
Otherwise, it's an illustration with some letters with the name of the company.
And by the way, I did not called anyone stupid. If anything, I stated that people are not stupid.
Thank you for your intervention. It gave me an opportunity to explain better the concept of my logo.
Good luck with the contest ! |
